Łukasz Stokłosa, Once upon a time, Rose Easton, London, 13 September – 15 November 2025
The practice of the Krakow-based Polish artist Łukasz Stokłosa, which blends pop culture with grandiose historic signifiers, is fuelled by a potent alembic of threat and melodrama, visual bombast and dark eroticism. The maximalist aesthetics associated with high Christianity and European monarchy—two institutions which, depending on one’s personal perspective, could be judged to be storied and eternal, or thoroughly outdated and redundant—can also be detected in Stokłosa’s visual style, which sees grime and gilt abutting each other in ways that are both gorgeous and subtly, uncannily sinister. He is preoccupied especially with the decline of decadence, and with the tragic, spectral quality inherent in faded pomp and glory. Via a process of spiritual degradation, objects which once held ceremonial or regal significance can be transformed into shadows of themselves, consigned to memory and tarnished by loss. Stokłosa’s preference for such haunting, haunted relics serves to make him, metaphorically speaking, a kind of court painter for ghosts.
